¿Se vienen los robots?



En realidad, ya están aquí, desde hace mucho tiempo. Pero están como estaba la informática antes de 1970: en grandes empresas industriales, y para algunas aplicaciones de seguridad. Son esos grandes brazos mecánicos que pintan coches, o realizan otras tareas repetitivas y precisas en grandes fábricas y centrales nucleares.

Pero todos tenemos una idea de los robots muy distinta a esa. Posiblemente algo parecido a R2 de La guerra de las galaxias o quizás al simpático «perro robot» creado por Sony. Lo que las amas (¡y amos!) de casa quieren es algo que les ayude en las tareas domésticas como, por ejemplo, aspirar por la casa.

Esto, que parece una cosa sencilla, no lo es tanto; y por eso no hay «robots aspiradores» comerciales. En realidad, los robots se enfrentan todavía con problemas muy serios, que los animales tienen superados casi desde siempre, pero que la informática aún no ha logrado resolver plenamente. Algunos de estos problemas son: el reconocimiento del entorno (la «visión inteligente»), la previsión de riesgos y problemas; el lograr librarse de los problemas (quedar atascado en alguna parte, por ejemplo); y otros más generales como la autonomía y la fiabilidad.

Los robots son ahora como el pan del sandwich: están en la parte superior (los grandes establecimientos) y en la inferior (sirven como juguetes), pero todavía les falta alcanzar el centro: el gran mercado de consumo.


Bill Gates, que escribió en diciembre un artículo sobre el tema en Scientific American dice que nos hallamos actualmente en un punto similar al que se encontraba la informática en la década de 1970: las bases estaban puestas, pero faltaba inventar el PC. De la misma manera, falta el paso que convierta a los robots en objetos cotidianos. Siempre atento a llevar agua a su molino, Gates encargó a uno de sus colaboradores que investigara las áreas de desarrollo de la robótica, para ver en qué podía colaborar su empresa.

Un gran problema que descubrió es que casi todos los proyectos se hacen «desde cero», programando cada nuevo modelo de robot por separado, lo que exige una inmensa cantidad de trabajo duplicado. Lo que se necesita es crear un lenguaje de programación que tenga en cuenta todos los avances recientes, y forme la base de futuros desarrollos. Algo así como lo que fue el lenguaje BASIC en los años setenta que, junto con el DOS, hizo despegar la informática personal. Por eso, un equipo de Microsoft liderado por Tandy Trower, está desarrollando técnicas para brindar a todos los diseñadores de robótica un lenguaje común, que tenga en cuenta las especialísimas exigencias de esta rama de la informática.

¿Reconoceremos los robots como tales? Salvo por unos pocos modelos antropomórficos, es probable que no. Serán «accesorios», «dispositivos para el hogar», «cosas» que nos ayuden en las tareas domésticas, en el trabajo, y hasta para conducir el coche. No los consideraremos «robots», pero los llamemos como los llamemos, eso serán: dispositivos automáticos capaces de hacer trabajos físicos por nosotros. Serán (son) una mezcla del ordenador y la herramienta; herramientas inteligentes, si se quiere. No podremos amarlos, como en la novela Yo, Robot, de Isaac Asimov (de la que se hizo una película con Robin Williams); pero ciertamente simplificarán nuestras vidas.

Gates sigue apostando al futuro del PC como pieza central de la revolución informática hogareña. Piensa en los robots, no tanto como aparatos independientes, sino como «periféricos» del PC, que aprovechan su poder de cómputo, para guiarse en las tareas que deben hacer. Para evitar el lío de cables estarán vinculados al PC mediante redes inalámbricas, por supuesto. «A medida que estos dispositivos se hagan accesibles a los consumidores, pueden tener un impacto tan profundo en la forma en que trabajamos, nos comunicamos, aprendemos y nos entretenemos, como el PC ha tenido durante los últimos 30 años».

Microsoft, mientras tanto, está atento a ver si puede atrapar una parte del pastel.
